Overview

Cybersecurity Engineer (Johns Hopkins Public Safety)

We are seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer who will be responsible for log management, host security, cloud security, asset discovery, vulnerability management, incident response, threat intelligence, Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM), Security Orchestration and Automated Response (SOAR), Network Access Control, and network security. The role requires understanding of firewall technologies (including next-generation firewalls) and the ability to implement in an evolving network. Experience with multiple firewall vendors is helpful, and the engineer will work with the network team to assist in managing firewall security and implementation.

The Engineer will run penetration and vulnerability scans externally and internally, produce reports, and support the technical team responsible for remediation. Experience with SaaS-based SIEM technologies and coordination with the enterprise IT team on security concerns is required. The role includes writing and delivering department security documentation and processes, reviewing with peers, coordinating internal reviews, and participating in audits.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


  • Security Monitoring: Respond to all user, system, and network security incidents; troubleshoot problems with security tools; stay abreast of emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and controls; filter and analyze large datasets from security logging and telemetry sources and build tools to integrate data into operational controls; automate security controls, data, and processes to provide improved metrics and operational support.
  • Data and tooling: Analyze data with SIEM and log aggregation tools; apply systems automation principles; stay informed about current hacking techniques and cybercrime; maintain knowledge of firewall technologies (Cisco or Palo Alto) and NGFW capabilities.
  • Host & Cloud Security: Design, implement, and administer automated security update technologies; implement advanced endpoint protection; test and address vulnerabilities; help shape security policies for on-premises and cloud environments; create technical security documents; interpret security requirements for business needs; familiarity with Nessus/Tenable/Qualys and communicating remediation steps.
  • Data Security & Compliance: Influence multi-disciplinary teams in implementing security controls; provide subject matter expertise on information security architecture; interpret requirements into business terms and communicate risks; familiarity with NIST, CJIS or CIS frameworks and their implementation.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Six years of related work experience with computer systems, applications and cybersecurity technologies.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education per the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge in the assigned technical areas this position is responsible for.
  • A CISSP certification is desirable.
